Science Fair Projects On Global Warming

GHS student goes to International Science Fair

Tyler Knapton, a junior at Grants High School, is doing big things with this year’s science project. During May 9-13, Knapton represented the Four Corners area by competing in the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Los Angeles. Though Knapton didn’t place this year, he was lined up against 64 foreign representatives across the world.

This wasn’t Knapton’s first time receiving such an opportunity, but he was pleased with the progress  made this year. Under close mentoring from Shelby Alexander, the school’s science teacher, Knapton began his new project titled ‘Atmosphere CO2 Trailing.’ Knapton’s project involves trying to absorb carbon monoxide in the earth’s atmosphere. “It’s like reverse global warming,” explained Knapton. The project landed him first place winnings at both the local and regional science fairs under the category of Environmental Science. Knapton’s regional winning prize was being elected to be one of two representatives from the Four Corners area to compete at the international science fair. “He did really well this year. It’s always pretty astonishing to see students from Grants compete in those big competitions because they are competing against students who have access to way more research. They have access to university labs and libraries, which we don’t really have here. He did really well for what he had to work with,” explained Alexander. The teacher has had many students go to the international science fair, but is pleased to be able to help students represent the area. “It was fun to go and see all the projects and just meet new people,” said Knapton. The junior has been doing science projects and competing in science fairs since elementary school. “I just really like science. My parents have always pushed me to be involved and it just turned out that I really enjoy it. There’s lots of great opportunities,” he exclaimed. Knapton plans to enter in the event next year, but isn’t certain he’ll be continuing with the same project. He does plan to prepare better. “I’m going to start earlier next year, and just make sure I get all the research I need.”
