Passenger charged after taxi searched
SYDNEY — A Newfoundland woman faces drug-related charges after police stopped a cab during a routine check in Nova Scotia and seized 12 kilograms of marijuana.
RCMP and the Cape Breton Regional Police Service held a news conference Friday to announce the bust.
"It will have an impact on organized crime because of the amount of drugs seized," said Insp. John Ryan, a federal support officer for the RCMP in Sydney.
Police said the marijuana had a street value of $114,000.
A taxi from Moncton, N.B., was stopped Wednesday on Highway 105 near the Marine Atlantic terminal in North Sydney as part of a routine check by RCMP and Cape Breton police. Police said a female passenger was in the taxi.
Ryan said officers were suspicious and called in a K-9 team to investigate.
"As a result of a search by the dog service, a large quantity of marijuana was found in packages in a suitcase in the vehicle," he said.
"We believe the passenger was en route to Newfoundland."
Ryan said there is not believed to be any association between the taxi driver and passenger.
Tammy Francis Earle, 32, made her first appearance in Sydney provincial court Thursday. She faces two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. She was remanded into custody and will next appear in court Monday.
Insp. Ron Donovan of the Cape Breton police said the seizure was the result of a great partnership between regional police and RCMP.
"We are doing everything we can to fight this battle," he said.

I'm a young (9 month old) Newfoundland mix and since I was a stray not much is known about my history. Except that I didn't have any manners but I'm learning fast! I like to play hard and I made lots of friends here! Despite my youthfulness, I also have a gentle side and can spend quiet time by myself without eating your house! I am going to be a big guy, so training is going to be key to ensure we have a wonderful, fun life together! I know I look like a goofball (OK, I am a goofball), but I also like to think so doggy school will be fun for both of us! So quick - come take me home and let's have some fun!
