Owner tries to sell Tillie Pierce House – Gettysburgtimes.com ...
What once was an historic bed and breakfast in historic, downtown Gettysburg has gone to sheriff’s sale
The Tillie Pierce House, which constitutes 301 and 303 Baltimore Street, at the corner of Breckenridge Street, is being offered for $400,000 by current property owner and Wilmington, Del., private investor Jerzy Wirth.
Wirth said he would be content with either selling or leasing the property.
“It’s best use is probably a bed and breakfast,” Wirth said. “An interesting angle on the building is its historical component with the Civil War and another following of paranormal activity.”
Wirth said that the building has been featured on one or two nationwide television shows about ghosts and haunted places.
After the death of William Breckenridge, the executor of the estate, William McCurdy, deeded the property to James Pierce, Tillie Pierce’s father. The deed was later passed on to Tillie in the late 1800s, after she had married and become Matilda Jane “Tillie” Alleman upon marriage.
Tillie, for whom the house was named after, was merely a teenager when the Battle of Gettysburg occured on July 1-3, 1863. Her diary has documented her day in school on June 26, 1863, when it was announced that “the Rebels are coming!”
“I was fully persuaded that the Rebels had actually come at last. What they would do with us was a fearful question to my young mind,” the diary reads. “Soon the town was filled with infantry, and then the searching and ransacking began in earnest.
