Mike Thompson: Obama, Republicans and debt ceiling talks
When President Barrack Obama suggested that he might invite the Republican congressional leadership to Camp David for talks in an effort to move debt ceiling negotiations forward, House Speaker John Boehner immediately shot down the idea. "The speaker has told the White House he sees no need to go to Camp David this weekend, Boehner spokesman Michael Steel told The Los Angeles Times.
Failure to reach a debt ceiling agreement before the August 2 deadline would mean that legions of Social Security recipients would be without income, interest rates would shoot to the moon, America would plunge back into a deep recession, our militarys ability to protect the country would be placed in jeopardy and the global economy could crash and burn.
But if you overlook trivial stuff like that, Boehners right, there is no need whatsoever for him to accept a presidential invitation to negotiate. Conversely, if Republicans propose debt ceiling negotiations at the top of the Washington Monument at 3 am, Obama had better show up.
