Local veterans talk about what life was like on the home front

Benner helped scrounge equipment for the Allies and searched the skies for enemy aircraft.
His home base was Catasauqua, a town near Allentown. He was 11 years old when the war ended.
Wolfe served overseas. Three miles overseas.
During the last two years of the war, Wolfe was stationed in Lisbon, N.C., helping patrol the coastline for enemy submarines.
Though neither man saw action in Europe or the Pacific, both manned posts on the home front. The pair shared their wartime experiences Saturday at the York County Heritage Trust on East Market Street.
On the third Saturday of each month, the Heritage Trust hosts Veteran Viewpoints, where men and women with firsthand accounts from the war share their experiences with visitors to the "Front Porch to Front Lines: York County Goes to War" exhibit.
The purpose of the exhibit is to understand "those four wars - World War I through Vietnam - through the eyes of York countians," said Lila Fourhman-Schaull, director of library and archives. "It's not really meant to be a history lesson on those four conflicts, but more telling personal stories."
Benner, 77, and Wolfe, 85, sat on folding chairs in mosquito netting, a display meant to look like a jungle command post.
"Home was sacrifice," Benner remembered.
He was seven when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. For the next several years, sugar became a luxury, new cars disappeared and victory gardens sprang up. He remembers lining his shoes with cardboard to plug the holes.
Five of his uncles went to war.

Wolfe was in high school when the war began. When he graduated in 1943, he tried to enlist as a Naval Aviation Cadet. At the time, Wolfe weighed 105 pounds, and the service required him to weigh 115 pounds. Recruiters told him to go home, eat bananas and drink a lot of milkshakes.
Next he tried to enlist in officer's training.
