Interview: Adam Lee Of Siduri And Novy Wines Visits Central Market Monday
Adam Lee is one of California's most esteemed Pinot Noir and Syrah winemakers, but he's not a West Coast native. Mr. Lee was born and raised right here in Austin, and is a graduate of Trinity University. Before decamping for California in the early 1990's, Lee worked as a salesperson and manager of the former Austin Wine & Spirits before moving on to a wine buyer role at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. At that job, he met his wife Dianna (who is still Lee's winemaking partner), and the two pooled their savings to move to California and start a winery - truly the stuff of legend. Over the past 15 years, the pair have produced literally hundreds of 90+ wines under the Siduri and Novy labels. Both Lees visit Central Market on Monday evening to host a tasting dinner, so we called Adam recently to discuss his thoughts on winemaking, Austin, and the best story he's ever heard over a glass of Pinot.
You're going to be in Austin soon for a pairing dinner at Central Market, and you're spending this week barnstorming Texas. Obviously there's a marketing side to this with pouring your wines and bringing the tasting room experience to new people, but is there something positive that you get out of the experience of interacting with people over a glass of wine?
Other than the fantastic July weather here in Texas? It was 49 degrees in my home in Santa Rosa this morning, apparently. There is quite a bit, honestly. I was born and raised in Austin, and my mom lives in Austin still, so part of that is our family is there. Dianna's parents live in a little town called Ennis outside of Dallas. So, I spend a lot of time with family and see people there, but I actually got my first wine job in Austin and worked in the Austin area for a while. I'm in Houston right now and I'm going to meet up with an old friend of mine, the first real wine salesperson that I really knew, the first guy that even brought a great wine back to me when I was working in retail in Austin, and I am going to get together to go out and have a few beers with him - so it kind of takes you back to the first days that I got into wine, and was really falling in love with wine. It's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
You work with a tremendous variety of grape styles with Siduri and Novy, but you are best known for your Pinot in the press. Is Pinot Noir your favorite grape to work with, or is it actually something else?

Article Content :I’m just getting back from a trip to Austin, Texas, for the International Association of Culinary Professionals annual conference. It was my first time in Austin and I was told I had to visit the Central Market — an amazing grocery store that you’ll only find in Texas. So after my presentation was over, that’s exactly what I did. I hitched a ride with some colleagues and we drove to the original Central Market. I soon found out why this is a top tourist destination in Austin that attracts 2 million guests a year. For starters, take a look at the chile display above. Maybe you’re only going to get this in Texas, but how wonderful to find such a wide array of dried chiles. And I love the Scoville scale that was posted above the chiles to indicate the degree of heat. There was also a salsa bar where you can buy freshly-made guacamole and a wide variety of salsas. The produce section at the Central Market was incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen better anywhere. They had everything! I was especially amazed at the variety of purple produce on display. I’m quite enamored with purple vegetables and I’ve written about these vibrant-hued vegetables several times, including In Praise of Purple Produce. Take a look at these beautiful purple baby artichokes… Central Market is a must-stop for anyone interested in tracking trends, and I spotted several innovative products while we were there. For instance, there was an entire section of dinner kits that shoppers can take home to make quick meals — like this vegetable fried brown rice kit. All of the kits included pre-cut, pre-measured ingredients that were ready for quick assembly at home. Great idea, I think.
