How to Get Your Credit Score | Ncorda Article Directory
Probably the most important measure of credit and economic health of a person in the United States is the FICO credit score. This score is calculated based on factors in your credit report and several formulas developed by the Fair Isaac Corporation (some in conjunction with major banks or credit bureaus). Some people are not aware that the FICO score is a private score, not one developed by the government. FICO is, however, widely reputed for their credibility, and their score drives millions of lending decisions every year.
Many people don’t know how to get credit score services. There are a number of options. In 2003, Congress signed into law the FACTA (Fair Credit and Reporting Bill) . This required the three major credit reporting agencies to make available to people at least one free credit report annually. If you space out your requests to these agencies every 4 months, it is possible to check your FICO credit score for free three times a year. This is not a free credit score! As of now there is no federal requirement that requires any company to provide a free credit score. So how do you get your credit score?
Although Equifax, Trans Union and Experian offer a free annual credit report, they provide services with unlimited access to your credit report and credit score for a fee. The paid service includes credit monitoring , unlimited access to current reports on your accounts and their standing, and other bits of information relating to your finances . You can find many of these services for under $15 per month, which is is well worth it if you value your credit.
In order to get your free credit report or a paid score, you are required to fill out a very detailed personal information form , including current address, your social security number and previous addresses . To get your free report annually, you have to provide this information every time, so so this is one reason to sign up for a regular service.
There are other credit reporting companies other than FICO. The three reporting bureaus launched AdvantageScore to compete with FICO. Free sites like Credit Karma make money off of advertising and fringe services. Supposedly, it gets its score from TransUnion. Credit scores vary depending on the source but are typically similar enough to be useful . When in doubt, check multiple sources.
