Arlene – first tropical storm of season forms

June 29, 2011 North Myrtle Beach, SC – NOAA forecasts the first tropical storm to make landfall in northeastern Mexico early Thursday morning.  Named Arlene, NOAA says the storm has sustained wind speeds of 40 mph.  At this level, the Beaufort Wind scale describes Arlene as a moderate gale where whole trees will be in motion and pedestrians will find walking inconvenient in walking against the wind.  NOAA does not expect Arlene to reach hurricane levels of 75 mph. In May, NOAA  released their seasonal storm forecast, warning residents to expect an above average hurricane season in the Atlantic. The Weather Service forecast calls for 12 to 18 named storms during the June 1 to November 30th season. NOAA expects six to 10 are likely to be hurricanes, and three to six of those could become major hurricanes, ranging from Category 3-5.
