Veterinary Q&A: Thyroid epidemic in dogs?
Question: What role does the thyroid play in the health of a dog and function?
Answer: In all mammals, the "master gland" major that basically control all functions of the body are the pituitary gland in the head and the thyroid gland in the neck.
The pituitary gland "tells" the thyroid what to do, based on blood levels of free thyroid hormone circulating through it. When these levels are low, the pituitary secretes a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which causes the thyroid to increase production of thyroid hormones.
However, when circulating levels of thyroid hormones are high, the pituitary releases less TSH to reduce the production of other thyroid hormones.
Question: Why is it so important? Answer: Because thyroid hormones, released from the thyroid gland, control of all organs and cellular functions of the body.
Question: You say there is an outbreak of canine thyroid disease. Please explain how you arrived at this conclusion.
Answer: Decades of breeding line and inbreeding in the breed purebred dogs - and even mixed breeds and crosses - were designed to "fix" the physical appearance, behavioral traits and performance types of special breed to normalize the races and make them more similar genetically. However, it also placed an increased risk of being affected by health conditions or undesirable behavior.
When we add the effect of increasing environmental pollution, depletion of ozone in the atmosphere, the accumulation of toxic waste and occurrence of more infectious agents, parasites and chemicals to the population genetically similar and therefore likely to dogs (or other animals and humans), the increase in autoimmune diseases, including endocrine disorders, becomes inevitable.
Thyroid disease is one of the most vulnerable of these conditions.
Question: Why the epidemic, such a serious problem?
Answer: Because thyroid dysfunction directly affects the health and longevity of the organization.
About every aspect of health of a dog is affected, to maintain healthy skin and coat in the fight against infections to promote alertness and concentration, maintainting body temperature and body weight adequate.
Question: Why is it such a misunderstood disease?
Doberman rescue near Toronto? | Toronto Singles
I live near Toronto and I’m looking to get involved with Dobermans. It seems like a good idea to volunteer with a rescue or another Doberman organization and I was wondering if anyone knew of a place I may be able to contact.
I don’t mind going a bit of a distance (an hour or so outside the GTA). I have heard of Harleywood Doberman rescue, I know it’s in Uxbridge but I can’t seem to find an address/location. So if you know where it is located or know of other Doberman rescues in the area please let me know.
Thank you!
Also if I cannot find a Doberman rescue but am still interested in getting the breed at a later date, would it make sense for me to work with a similar large breed dog? Or just a regular animal shelter?
