Huske Hardware owner wins national business award for veterans
Fayetteville's Josh Collins, an owner of Huske Hardware House Brewing Co., was named the 2011 Vetrepreneur of the Year by the National Veteran-Owned Business Association.
His portrait is on the cover of this month's Vetrepreneur magazine (navoba.com/voy2011).
Collins, a retired special operations soldier, was chosen from 3 million veterans who are business owners. The judges, who are business experts, looked for leadership, business acumen, success and desire to cultivate veteran entrepreneurship, according to the magazine.
"I was extremely surprised and humbled," Collins said. "Startled is the first word that comes to mind."
Collins and his wife, Tonia, and a team of fellow ex-military investors have operated the Hay Street restaurant since 2008. In the magazine article, Collins describes how military experience translated into success in the restaurant business, a venture in which revenues have topped $3 million since it opened.
Collins and his partners are opening a Wet Willie's frozen daiquiri franchise next door to Huske, in a 7,000-square-foot space (with a patio in the rear) that takes up the remaining three storefronts of the building. An extensive remodel is under way, and Collins says he's hoping for a summer opening.
Crews chipping off plaster in the space recently uncovered an old Pepsi ad that once was an exterior mural. It describes the 5-cent soft drink as "healthful." Collins says they'll preserve the mural in the store. See pictures here: facebook.com/WetWilliesFayetteville.

Still no news on a brand for the Hotel Bordeaux & Convention Center. Dipak Thakker, whose company owns the hotel, said Friday that it will be at least another week and a half before he's ready to announce a franchise agreement.
The hotel formerly known as a Holiday Inn had entertained offers from four brands. Paperwork with one brand was supposedly signed a couple of weeks ago.
