2011 WSOP Main Event Day 5 Mid-Level 19 Update

Let the Day 5 slaughter begin.  The 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event is back in action and, so far, the carnage has been non-stop.  Several big name players like Miami John Cernuto and Freddy Deeb headed home early, while others like Daniel Negreanu and Kevin Saul are off to rocky starts.  We’ve got the highlights from the first hour of play here on Day 5.  Play began with Level 19 (Blinds 5,000/10,000 ante 2,000).  The plan for today is to play all but ten minutes of three levels, take a dinner break, then return for two hours and ten minutes of action before calling it a day:

Freddy Deeb Eliminated

One of the biggest names to fall early was Freddy Deeb. He raised to 23,000 on the button, then Andrew Webking reraised to 63,000 out of the small blind. Deeb thought a minute or so before moving all-in for his last 250,000 or so. Webking called with K K and Deeb trailed with A K .

The board ran out 6 5 2 Q 3 and Deeb failed to improve and hit the rail just twenty minutes into Day 5 play. After the hand, Webking was up to 975,000.

Mass Carnage in Multiple Three-Way All-Ins

Some short stacks were bound to come firing out of the gate on Day 5 of the Main Event, but the amount of three-way all-ins during the first hour of play has been staggering.

On the very first hand of the day, Garry Gates raised in early position to 22,000, a late position player called, and John Hines raised to 68,000 from the small blind. Jonathan Pinx went all-in from the big blind for 143,000 total, Gates called, and Hines called. The flop was J 6 2 and Hines went all-in for about 200,000, and Gates called. All three hands were turned over, and they were monsters, as Pinx had Q Q , Gates had K K , and Hines had A A and the lead. The turn was the 6 and the river was the 4 . Pinx more than tripled up to about 460,000, and with the side pot Gates essentially broke even, ending the hand with about 775,000.

Maxime Nault went all-in under the gun for 165,000 under the gun, and the action folded to Mark Newhouse in middle position, who called. James Randolph called from the big blind, and the flop was Q T 4 . Randolph went all-in into a dry side pot for 360,000 and Newhouse called. Newhouse had the lead with K K against Randolph’s A T and Nault’s 9 9 . The turn was the 4 and the river was the 5 , giving Newhouse both pots to Newhouse, which totaled over 1.1 million chips. After the hand, Newhouse had 1.65 million.

Music: {allcanada} ESKIMOS STAY UNDEFEATED WITH VICTORY OVER ...

EDMONTON -- Daniel Porter scored a pair of touchdowns as the Edmonton Eskimos continued to look great out of the gate, defeating the B.C. Lions 33-17 on Saturday.

The Eskimos improved to 3-0 on the year, the first time Edmonton has been perfect through three games since 2002. Last season the Eskimos didn't get their third win until Sept. 26.

The Lions are heading in the opposite direction, now 0-3 to start the season, and in a last-place tie in the West with Saskatchewan, also winless thus far.

The Eskimos came out with a workman-like long opening drive but were forced to accept a 20-yard Damon Duval field goal to kick off the scoring.

Edmonton stretched its lead to 10-0 with a minute and half to play in the opening quarter as Lion David Hyland made an ill-timed leap at intercepting a Ricky Ray pass, leaving Fred Stamps free to scamper 38 yards for a touchdown.

The Esks got a bonus point on the ensuing kickoff as it slipped into the end zone and was inadvertently booted out of bounds by returner Tim Brown, going into the books as a 95-yard single.

Edmonton's special teams came up big to start the second quarter as a Paul McCallum punt was partially blocked by Mike Cornell and picked up at the B.C. 34, leading to a Duval field goal and a 14-0 Eskimos lead.

The Lions finally got on the board with a 45-yard McCallum field goal with just under five minutes to play.

The Eskimos quickly responded as a huge 45-yard pass and run on a broken play by Adarius Bowman led to a five-yard passing TD from Ray to Porter.

However the Lions would close the gap with a rapid scoring sequence of its own as Geroy Simon reeled in a pair of big passes from quarterback Travis Lulay, one for 38 yards and then a 25-yard TD pass, to make for a 21-10 Edmonton lead.

The Esks completed the late scoring flurry in the first half with a Duval single on a missed field goal to lead by 11 points at the midmark.

After another Duvall single on a field goal miss it looked like B.C. was going to close to within a touchdown, but T.J Hill stepped in front of a Lulay pass and took the ball back 71 yards to the Lions' 18. The game-changing pick would lead to a five-yard touchdown push by Porter to end the third quarter with Edmonton ahead 30-10.

B.C. turned over the ball again to start the fourth as Chris Thompson popped a ball loose from Simon and Jykine Bradley recovered the fumble at midfield.
