Myrtle Beach businesses boom with July 4th tourist bump

Tourists first settled into their hotels, condos or campers Saturday in preparation to the holiday weekend. Then, they spent money.

Ben Robinson , owner of Moped Rentals of Myrtle Beach , said he was skeptical of the tourists really coming.

"The beach has been lacking the past few days,” he said. “Everyone (other business owners) on the beach is wondering, 'What is going on? Where are all the tourists? They're not here.' This morning (Saturday) we came in, they're here.

One person was injured in a fire that broke out Friday evening on the eighth floor of a condo building on 20th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach firefighters were still on the scene at 10 p.m. clearing out smoke from the 72 unit Atlantis building, across from The Breakers resort.

Firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation around 8 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from room 802 when they arrived, according to Battalion Chief Tom Gwyer.

Dog rescued during Friday night Myrtle Beach condo fire

After waiting 90 wrenching minutes, Scott and Robin Jobes saw a fireman come out from a smoking condo building carrying their yorkie-poodle, Chloe.

"My wife was a wreck," Scott Jobes said Saturday morning. "She just ran right to the fireman. As a matter of fact, a couple of people did. They were all concerned about the dog."

Jobes added that Chloe was shaking for a little bit, but is OK. Firefighters wanted to wait for the smoke to clear before they went in to search for the dog.

The extent of the damage and cause of the fire are not yet known. Gwyer said it appears the fire started in a bedroom. He also said most residents of the building would likely be allowed to return to their rooms, though not those on the 8th floor.

The condition and identity of the injured person were not yet known late Friday. Gwyer said the person was taken to an area hospital.

A large crowd gathered around the building and on the sidewalks of North Kings Highway as firefighters worked.

Residents of the building said they often have fire alarms go off, but this is the first time it's been for a "real fire."

"People burn toast, that sort of thing," said Pauline Toth, who lives on the 12th floor of the building. "It was a wake-up call."

She and her husband, Bill, were unable to get down from their condo due to the amount of smoke on the floors below them.
