Bargain retailer to open on Spartanburg's west side

Harrisburg, Pa.-based Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, a retailer of closeout, surplus and salvage merchandise, plans to build its first location in South Carolina at the Market Square shopping center off W.O. Ezell Boulevard.

The 28,000-square-foot store will occupy two spaces that formerly housed T.J. Maxx and GameStop, according to building plans filed with the city.

A company official could not be reached for comment on Friday.

According to Ollie’s website, hiring has begun for the new store. The open positions include full-time salaried and hourly positions, as well as part time hourly positions. The company offers an employee discount and other benefits, such as dental, medical, vision, 401(k) and vacation time.

Founded in 1982, the company operates more than 100 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, North Carolina and New Jersey.

Ollie’s carries a range of name brand merchandise that for the most part comes directly from manufacturers across the world.

In addition to its low prices, the company is known for its customer loyalty program, “Ollie’s Army.”

Under the program, customers earn points when they shop at Ollie’s stores. When they accrue 250 points, the company sends them a discount certificate in the mail.

Ollie’s has a “No Hard Time” guarantee that allows customers to return purchases for any reason within 30 days for a full refund as long as they have a sales receipt.

The company will join a list of retailers and restaurants to invest this year in the west side’s busy shopping corridor along W.O. Ezell Boulevard and Blackstock Road.

Toys “R” Us recently opened its new Toys R Us/Babies R Us concept at Westgate Village Shopping Center. Old Navy also is in the process of relocating from Westgate Crossing to the revamped center that recently welcomed the return of LongHorn Steakhouse.

Chipotle Mexican Grill plans to build a restaurant in the 7,000-square-foot strip mall under construction on the former Palmetto Bank site, 1490 W.O. Ezell Blvd.

Buffalo Wild Wings is planning to build a restaurant at 1494 W.O. Ezell Blvd., behind Olive Garden and Golden Corral.

Harrison’s Workwear, Matress Firm and Panera Bread Co. also have opened on the west side recently.

On June 24, Ohio-based fabric and craft retailer Jo-Ann opened a store in the former Old Navy space at Westgate Crossing. The store carries fabric, sewing machines and supplies, quilting and needle art supplies and accessories, craft supplies and scrapbooking items. It also has classes for knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, jewelry making, food crafting and others.
