The CCD became a problem around 2006 and has almost continually been a problem in the years since. Kelling said the issue could be a beehive catching a fungus and a virus at the same time, where the bees can’t fight off both at once. In a normal circumstance, Kelling said, bees can fight off a fungus or virus individually, but fighting both off is when it becomes deadly for the hive.
