TFTE: SF Pride Gets High Marks
The build up to the 41st Annual San Francisco Pride Celebration was kind of like the build up to Britney Spears’ 2007 VMA performance. The Pride Committee had a year of drama befitting Ms. Spears, and like the hype of Britney’s comeback performance everyone wondered if this hot mess could pull it off.
After last year's celebration about 20 community groups that operated beverage booths complained they were shorted cash, getting about half the money from sales they had gotten in previous years. The event's longtime contracted beverage manager quit over the issue. Mismanagement, bookkeeping blunders, evasive leadership and the revelation that the organization was over $200,000 in debt ultimately resulted in the public outcry that forced out the organization's executive director as well as the board president.
New leadership managed to reduce the debt to $77,000 since December, in part by cutting administrative expenses, and unlike Britney at the VMA the masses were dazzled by the performances and the reviews were outstanding.
The theme this year was and focused on LGBT youth and taking a stand against bullying. Pride named The Trevor Project as its national organizational grand marshal. A partner of It Gets Better, The Trevor Project offers LGBT youths support through various channels, including a 24-hour national suicide hotline. Among those honored at Pride were one of the project’s founders, James Lecesne, and board member Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the screenplay for the 2008 hit “Milk”.
Other glitterati included Chaz Bono, and someone San Franciscans think of as their ideal landlady for her role as Mrs. Madrigal in Tales of the City , Olympia Dukakis.
In addition to the politicians, beautiful people, drag queens and leather daddies you expect the parade was incredibly diverse. Hundreds of small children with their parents marched near floats celebrating LGBT elders, the Pink Pistols were out in force as were the Vegan Activists. Countless religious groups were there as were atheist groups. Overall the event felt fresh, joyous and welcoming.
Major companies headquartered in the region were well represented including floats from Google, Facebook, Wells Fargo and Virgin America Airlines.
My partner Damon Harris and old friend Donald Cole joined me in the tongue-in-cheek judging of the floats. We held up our dry erase boards with our scores to the amusement of the parade participants. Damon was the Paula Abdul of the group with 10’s nearly across the board, while I was more of a Simon Cowell, only once going above a 9.8.

After meeting at last year's VMAs Britney Spears and Russell Brand have been reunited in a super sexy promo for this year's awards .
Standing by a pool looking sexy in a white bikini , Spears says in a voiceover, "I wonder if he'll invite me. I mean, I can obviously get an invite, but it would be nice for Russell to invite me personally now that we're friends and all."
Meanwhile, Brand stresses over his own VMA appearance. "I hope I didn't balls it up with her last time,". "Some of those things I said could have been construed as offensive . I hope she don't think ill of me."
Brit adds "Should I have played it up more when he was flirting with me last year? I have to admit there is something sexy about his dangerous ways."
