Sports pioneer helps women get fit, healthy

— Kathy Kinane was a women sports pioneer before there were women sports pioneers.

In high school at the time Title IX came in 1972, Kinane took full advantage. She played five sports at West Torrance High, earning MVP honors in three of them. In 1974, Kinane was a member of what may have been the first AYSO California girls high school all-star teams to play soccer in Germany. The squad went undefeated during the seven-match exhibition series. She also ran on the West Torrance boys cross country team until a girls team was started in 1975.

Upon graduation, she was the first woman to receive a cross country/track scholarship at UC Santa Barbara. In addition, she played on the first women’s club soccer team. In 1982, Kinane became one of the few female head women’s cross country coaches at the Division I level. She also had the opportunity to compete in the first U.S. women’s marathon Olympic Trials in 1984.

And now she’s the director of Kinane Events, which holds various running events that have raised more than $30 million for various charities and has had more than 830,000 participants.

She still has plenty of energy at age 51. So much so that she coaches a running club that meets twice a week. And she still has a pioneering spirit to help women participate in sports.

“I want to help young girls to incorporate running into their lifestyle,” said Kinane, a Carlsbad resident.

When she participated in the 1993 Portland (Ore.) Marathon race director conference, Bart Yasso from Runner’s World magazine stated that only 20 percent of the running participants in the United States were women. Kinane is proud that women now make up 65 to 70 percent of running events.

“I’m happy that women have embraced a sport that’s accessible to them,” Kinane said. “There are not a lot of sports women can do that are affordable. This sport can be done alone or with friends and family, which makes it a great lifetime sport.”

But she wants to do more, especially for minority women. At the behest of Robert Muscio, a local philanthropist and nephew of legendary tennis player Bobby Riggs, she started the Move Your Feet Before You Eat! Foundation, a nonprofit organization which encourages minority women to include running in their life. The foundation supports before- and after-school running programs at 44 North County schools.

Kinane cofounded Elite Racing in 1988 with Tim Murphy, then left to form her own company in 1991.

The minor difference in the weather isn't enough to account for my increase in energy. I'm better off because I switched energy drinks. The previous week I tried a popular energy drink with only sodium and potassium.

Be cool: Tips for a sweltering weekend

How Much Ice Do You Need For Your Drinks?

Remember, I am assuming the drink (and the aluminum can) start at 22 oC. The key here is that the change in energy of the ice (turning to water) plus the change in energy of the drink must be zero. I can write this as: The is one problem.

OC Energy Kik-It Original Energy Drink

Jason's Review:
I enjoy the sour part of the OC Energy Kik-It Original Energy Drink, but I don't like the bitterness. It's makes my mouth tingle, like candy cane, and strangely makes me feel like I need to eat something. The packaging made me feel like this was going to be cinnamony, hot, or perhaps cherry flavored. I discovered that the drink is blue, and is unlike anything the packaging indicates, since the packaging doesn't indicate textually anything about how the drink tastes.

The bottle shape is unique. It fits in my car drink holder, and the shape makes it incredibly difficult to drop.

I was uninspired by the energy content. Perhaps I've become jaded by monstrous drinks like 5-Hour Energy Shot , On Go Energy Shot and Upshot Energy Shot , but many of the energy drinks I've had recently are like AAA baseball teams. They're certainly genuine, but they haven't quite made it to the Major Leagues.

If you compare this to Red Bull, it's a pretty good value, but if you compare it to Upshot, not even in the same ballpark.

Hooray, another energy drink marketed primarily through sex appeal. Similar to Hooters Energy Drink , which we held in such high regard. For those not as "up-to-date", OC Energy has some "OC Angels" that promote their products in places like clubs, and in their OC Hummer. I think one of the "Angels" is on, or makes guest appearances on "The Real Housewives of Orange County", which is somewhat of an oxymoron, since my minimal research turned up that not all of the people on the show live in Orange County, nor are they all Housewives. What they do all appear to be is self-absorbed, superficial, and from reading their bios on Wikipedia, quite a bit skanky. Sex sells, but so do drugs, abortions, and L. Ron Hubbard books, but at the end of the day, I don't want to be the one selling it.

Now, for the drink, other than being peddled by people who's primary job is to be aesthetically pleasing, it's pretty good. It's blue, but doesn't necessarily stain your teeth and lips blue (I drank one that left me with just a blue tongue, but I drank another that stained everything from my neck up...give or take). The initial taste is pleasant, and strangely tastes like what I'd expect a blue drink to taste like.
