Ranch Rodeo promises three days of non-stop action

The Bend Ranch Rodeo is fast approaching.

Ranch teams from Texas and New Mexico have sent in their entries and are loading their horses, and chuckwagon cooks from all over the state of Texas are on their way.

Don't miss this year's event, scheduled Aug. 11-13 in Alpine.

The ranch rodeo is going to be three days of non-stop horse action.

The weekend begins at 9 a.m. Aug. 11 with a S.H.O.T. (Stock Horse of Texas) Clinic at the Sul Ross State University SALE Arena on E. Hwy. 90. At 9 a.m. Aug. 12, there will be a S.H.O.T. competition at the arena. That evening at 7 will see the first of two performances of the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo. After the rodeo, a dance at the Granada Theater will feature the band Ranger Canyon.

Events include:

• Ranch Bronc Riding - One member from each team must ride a bucking horse for 8 seconds in a working ranch saddle and one-rein halter. (This one gets nasty!)

• Wild Cow Milking - Four members from each team must rope a cow and milk her in less than two minutes. Milking may not commence until the rope is off the cow, so three men must hold her. (This one gets wild!)

• Team Doctoring - Three members from each team must pick one numbered bovine from a large herd, rope it, and place a non-toxic paint mark between the animal's eyes in less than two minutes. (This one is a ranch necessity!)

• Team Branding - Up to six members from each team can compete in this event. Two teams compete at the same time, and each has two minutes to rope, throw and mark (with non-toxic paint) two calves each. (This one is exciting!)

• Team Sorting - Four men from each team have two minutes to sort five cattle from a herd. The catch is that these cows are numbered, and the cowboys must sort them in numerical order based on a starting number called out by the announcer. (This one is tough!)

These five events earn each team points toward qualifying for the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in November, and the winner of the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo automatically wins a place in the championships.

In addition to these events, there will activities for kids and door prize opportunities.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 13, the 17-and-under working cow horse event will showcase the talents of rider and horse in many ranch-related exercises.

A Saturday chuckwagon cooking competition will become final when tickets go on sale at 4 p.m. for an authentic cowboy dinner at 5:30. The Saturday night Ranch Rodeo performance starts at 7 and ends with the awards ceremony. The final event will be a cowboy dance at the Lobo Bar (Highland Inn) after the awards ceremony featuring the band Gunslinger.
