Wireless speakers work to change the game

Modern technology is great and all, but it’s still studded with pain points. Just ask anyone who’s ever tried to set up a home network, to send a video by email or to maintain a phone call driving down Interstate 95.

The makers of home theaters would love us to discover surround-sound speakers, which transform the experience of movies and music. But as many a spouse can tell you, those speaker setups entail five or seven pain points: the speaker cables snaking across the floor. We’ve got wireless phones, wireless remotes and wireless networks. Why can’t we have wireless speakers?

We can, of course. They’ve been available for years. But few people buy them. Ira Fagan, owner of a home theater installation company in Fairfield, Conn., puts it like this: “Unless your wireless speakers cost $10,000, they’ll sound like a cordless phone.”

Aperion Audio thinks it’s about to change that game. Its new Intimus 4T Summit Wireless 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System costs $2,500, and is supposed to rival wired speakers at the same price.

(That might sound expensive, especially when surround-sound kits at Best Buy start at $180. On the other hand, some people pay $10,000 for a pair for high-end speakers. On sale.)

Once the delivery truck pulls away, your front porch bends under the weight of seven boxes: a black transmitter box the size of a cigar box; a wide rectangular center speaker that goes right under or over the TV; two tall, skinny, towerlike front speakers; two small bookshelf-type speakers that go beside or just behind your seating area; and a subwoofer, a huge black cube that pumps out low frequencies. The manual, the remote control and the tech support (based in the United States) are all excellent.

A 7.1 seven-speaker setup — with two more surround speakers behind your couch — costs $3,000.

You don’t need to worry about the great-looking piano-black finish getting scratched during shipping; each speaker is wrapped in plastic, then slipped into an individual velvet drawstring bag, surrounded by polystyrene foam and packed inside a shipping box. Where’s Houdini when you need him?

It turns out that “the first decent-sounding, reasonably priced wireless speakers” isn’t the Aperions’ only claim. The speakers also calibrate themselves, saving $1,000 or more on having a professional do the work.

Is it possible to connect my old Matsui TV (which does not have a scart socket, just a single socket for an aerial) to a Technika  Freeview set-top box.  The Matsui TV manual shows how to connect the TV to a VCR, using an aerial lead by connecting one end of an aerial connector lead to the TV socket and the other end to the OUT socket on the VCR; then connecting the aerial lead to the IN socket on the VCR. My Sony TV has finally packed up and as I have an old Matsui TV (model 1407S), I thought it might be possible to connect the Matsui to a Technika  Freeview set-top box.  The TV manual shows how to connect the TV to a VCR, using an aerial lead to access potentially more tv stations than the standard 5 it currently receives.  However, the TV only has an aerial socket and no scart connection.  The process shows connecting one end of an aerial connector lead to the TV socket and  the other end to the OUT socket on the VCR; then connecting the aerial lead to the IN socket on the VCR. If you haven't previously watched your VCR playback on this Matsui TV, you will need to tune a spare preset/memory on the TV to the VCR's output . On the Matsui TV, use either preset number "9" or its special "VCR" preset. During the tuning process, so you recognise the VCR's output, play a film you know well! Remember to press the Matsui TV's STORE button (if necessary) after getting the film on-screen. It's most convenient to mostly watch live TV from the Freeview box (via the TV's "VCR" preset). As stated in the linked post, when you want to watch & record different TV stations and one of those is on Freeview, it must be the Freeview TV station which is recorded . Press a Matsui's preset 1-5 to view an analogue station live, whilst recording from Freeview. By far the most convenient type of recorder to use to record terrestrial/Freeview DTV signals is one with a built-in hard-disc-drive (HDD). A HDD-based DTV recorder means that the playback picture quality is identical to the original broadcast, you can play and record simultaneously, subtitles can be recorded, timer programming is easy from an on-screen TV Schedule (aka EPG), programmes are automatically labelled on-screen with their titles and synopses.
