Vans Warped Tour goes hardcore

As I walked past the gates slathered in posters promoting the summer’s latest releases from the bands currently “in” with the teen crowd, I passed a 13-year-old girl in a pink tutu, a man in his late 20s sporting a leather jacket with slicked back hair and a bum passed out in his own vomit.

Setting the Vans Warped Tour downtown at the massive, vacant Plaza Hotel parking lot is a genius idea as it may be the only venue with the right amount of attitude for the surly tour.

Last time the Warped Tour was here, I was 16. I remember decking myself out in my best spiked bracelets and throwing on my best bondage pants, suffering in the heat, but not really caring as I rocked out to Alkaline Trio and NOFX.

Not this year. Flash forward seven years later, and I’m in jeans and a T-shirt. Most of the bands on the tour haven’t even been around as long as the pair of Doc Marten’s that I break out for nearly every concert. This is no matter though, I’m ready to discover what’s hot on the tour this year.

The year 2011 will definitely be remembered as the year of hardcore for Warped. The first band I watched that day was August Burns Red on the Main Stage.

It was a pretty solid set of brutal hardcore, with the token hardcore-dancing-kids being ejected by security for karate-kicking people in the face. If you’re not a Ninja-master scene kid, stick to the standard circle pit and everything will be okay.

I moved on to the Advent Stage and checked out Miss May I. Didn’t I just watch the same band on the Main Stage? I felt this way during every other hardcore band that played. All screams and grunts with down-tuned guitars courtesy of guys in skinny jeans and athletic gear. No thanks.

In between acts, it was interesting to wander between the random merchandise stands. A Vegan group offered people one dollar to watch an informative video about animal cruelty. Lines of teens formed to watch these videos, presumably to put their dollar towards the $3 water bottled being schlepped by the vendors. Unfortunately, the refilling stations for said water bottles were not free, as promised on the website, but $2. It was worth the extra dollar to purchase a new, cold one.

While walking around aimlessly, I managed to discover two new bands whom I’ve added to my favorites. The first is Bad Rabbits, a five-piece funk and R&B influenced group. Their crowd was small, but those that were present were feeling it. I joined them, dancing and swaying to the beat and velvet voice of Fredua Boakye, who must have somehow spawned from Rick James and Keith Sweat. Though they may have been out of place at Warped, the talent was undeniable.
