21st-century quilts sew different from Grandma's

Applique: A piecing process using small amounts of fabric that are sewn onto a background fabric in a decorative design such as curved floral or animal motifs. Applique can be done by hand, machine or with fusible web. It is often combined with pieced blocks or placed in the border to frame a pieced quilt.

Batiks: High thread-count fabrics that are made by covering a design area with wax or another substance to prevent dye from penetrating into that area. Indonesia is famous for its batiks.

Batting: Sometimes called wadding or stuffing, this is the layer in the center of the quilt sandwich, giving it warmth and thickness. Batting can be cotton, polyester, blends, silk or wool.

Blindstitch: A type of invisible stitching often used for applique.

Free-Motion Quilting: A type of machine quilting in which the feed dogs are lowered or covered while quilting using a darning foot. Because there are no feed dogs to pull the fabric, the quilter must create the design by moving the quilt sandwich under the needle.

Freezer paper: Quilters use it as a model for application by drawing the design on the side of the paper, cutting board and the model with a hot cloth, iron and dry.

Applied reversed traditional applique sewing pattern (the piece of design) on top of a background. Reverse applique quilters sew the pattern of the back, then cut and turn on the fabric edge up to reveal the pattern.

Quilting Sashiko: A Japanese-style drawings with precision using quilt embroidery and silk tapestry. Points are great on top, but small on the back.

Dots: points close after a quilt design that does not pass through irregular, used to fill the space background and create surface textures.

Band re: cutting and sewing strips of fabric before cutting individual forms.

Thangles: A paper manufacturing process to reconstruct a perfect half-square triangles.

While searching the internet for ecclesiastical embroidery patterns (which are very difficult to find) I came across another version of a Tudor Rose from the Carpenter Cope of Salisbury Cathedral on the RNS website. http://www.royal-needlework.org.uk/galleries Scroll to the bottom of the page. When I first came across that site, I was bemoaning the fact that I could never travel to the UK to have a chance to learn these skills. Thanks to you, I will be able to learn here! Your attention to small details such as the sharp point on the leaves are invaluable to making an outstanding piece.
