Wii Play Motion

The original Wii Play is one of the best selling retail games ever made, mainly because it only cost $10 (or R100 in South Africa) more than a controller by itself. It was certainly worth that price as it, along with Wii Sports, were the two games that kept us coming back to the Wii in the early days.

The idea of a sequel must have been in Nintendo’s planning for a long time, but it took nearly two years after the release of the Motion Plus controller to create its accompanying Wii Play Motion. This game is also a pack-in, being sold along with the Wii MotionPlus at the same price as a controller on its own. As such, it’s a no-brainer if you’re looking for a Wii MotionPlus controller. And if you really enjoyed Wii Play you’ll find this game offers more content, although it’s likely you won’t find the same freshness in the new game – motion control has become commonplace and apart from a few of the games Wii Play Motion doesn’t push the state of the art of control forward.

I’ll briefly describe the games and my thoughts on each:

Cone Zone – balance an ice cream as a giant scoop keeps adding more and more scoops of ice-cream on the top of it. To do this you hold the remote vertically as if you were holding the cone itself. This has a two player mode where you also have to avoid colliding with the other player’s ice cream. A secondary mode measures how good you are at twirling ice-cream. Verdict: great – it’s basic but immediately satisfying and fun.

Veggie Guardin’ – this is pretty much whack-a-mole. Moles pop up in front of you trying to steal your fruit and you whack them before they do. Every now and then a Mii will pop up instead of a mole, and you’ll lose points if you hit them. This includes a four player versus mode where players compete to score the most points by whacking moles the fastest. There’s also a Recall mode which is a simple memory game like Simon Says. Verdict: ok – it’s whack-a-mole, and very reminiscent of Start the Party stuff. It’s really polished though and fun to watch.

Skip Skimmer – skim a stone over a lake. Your throw strength and stone position is measured which determines how many bounces you get. Score the most bounces in five throws to win. If you do well in your first few throws you’ll get some interesting stones to use. There’s also a score mode where you score points for getting your stone through hoops and landing it in the centre of a target. Verdict: good – stone skipping is a brilliant idea and it’s well implemented here. I particularly enjoyed the Analysis option that replays your flick and rates it, suggesting ways of improving it. I would love other motion control games to do that.

There is nothing in this collection that's quite as pure simple fun as the best of Wii Play, and the games are a mixed bag. In Wii Play there were a few games I kept going back to when playing with new players (Laser Hockey, Fishing,

The Nintendo Wii is Super-Awesome — Backpacking Dad

Want her to play Super Mario All-Stars too much (it’s just thumb games, Super Mario Bros 1-3 (and The Lost Levels), with little physical activity and no educational content to make up for that lack; maybe when she’s older).

She’s had a renewed interest in playing games on the Wii over the last few weeks. Until then she was mostly interested in using the Wii to watch shows and movies on Netflix. We canceled our cable television account about five months ago, and part of what made that decision easy for us was that we had the Wii in the living room to access Netflix and YouTube videos for the kids. It is dangerously easy for a four-year old to watch movies on Netflix with the Wii controller. We had to teach her early on how to look for the “Children and Family” row when choosing something to watch; she still checks with us before selecting titles she doesn’t recognize, because she knows we think Batman is “too fighty”.

I haven’t had a gaming system in the house since I was in high school. I have utterly embraced having a Wii around.

My arms are kind of tired now, though.

(As you might imagine, I have a material connection with Nintendo. All opinions above are my own, even though I have every reason in the world to just pass off what a famous brand tells me because they are giving me things. How can you trust me? This is an outrage! You should telegraph Congress about it. You should believe nothing. Except that the Nintendo Wii is indeed super-awesome.)

I would be OUTRAGED! Except we have a Wii too, and the kid loves it – and he loves the sports games too, which is nice (and requires less yelling on my part and whining on his part when I want him to play a more physical game). He does have Super Mario, and there’s a definite danger of him playing it too much, but we just try to keep on top of it and he seems to be doing ok.
