Musco happy to be back on the bench

Jonathan Musco was just warming up yesterday morning, as he presses 275 pounds at Lange Middle School, site of the Show-Me State Games competition "powerlifting.

After four or five repetitions, the Musco 181 pounds jumped up from the bench and began working on his neck.

Musco, who finished first in his weight class in the bench press in the 2008 and 2009 Show-Me State Games, couldn’t compete last year because of a herniated disc in his cervical spine — the region just below the skull — that compressed his spinal cord. It resulted in a complete loss of reflexes in his left arm and caused him muscular atrophy and significant pain.

He couldn’t pick up his then 8-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, or play kickball with her because he couldn’t run. Each step sent a pain shooting down his arm.

“I was basically disabled,” said Musco, a Connecticut native who attended college and medical school in North Carolina. “I could go to work and function, but I wasn’t able to do any real activities.”

A surgery his insurance company considered “experimental” has helped him regain his strength and return to all the pastimes he did before, not the least of which is powerlifting.

Musco ignored symptoms of his injury for several months, writing it off as ordinary muscle soreness and taking Motrin to cope with the pain. But a man who once lifted more than 400 pounds in a competition at the Boone County Fair was working out one day, trying to push 275 pounds off his chest, when his left arm wouldn’t cooperate.

His friend and weightlifting partner Rick White, a surgeon at the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, looked him over and suspected the problem involved his neck. That was later confirmed by a formal examination that included X-rays and an MRI.

For a heavy lifter who has raced jet skis professionally, been skydiving and trained in mixed martial arts, there was no way to be sure what caused the injury.

His doctor told him about the Prestige Cervical Disc, a prosthesis produced by Medtronic, which was preferable to the more traditional repairs melting of a whole segment of the neck, putting additional pressure on the vertebrae above and below below.

The FDA approved the use of the device in 2007, but the insurance company Musco not cover the surgery to have it installed, although it was less expensive than fusion surgery. It took several calls - including a six-page letter citing at least 15 magazines - to convince the insurance company to change its attitude.
