Japanese beetles are back with a vengeance
-- B. C. of Belleville
Q. I have a bunch of Japanese beetles feeding on my grapes. The leaves are all eaten and it happened overnight. Is there any hope?
-- G.L. Lively Grove
A. Well the moles have been sounding the alert that there were many grub worms in the lawn areas and they were correct. As if overnight, the Japanese beetles made their presence this past week and the damage is extensive.
Just when the thirteen year cicadas finally died at the end of their life cycle, the adult Japanese beetles have shown up. One gardener even stated that the beetles were climbing over one another to feed on the grape leaves.
I was expecting a number of rose growers to sound the alarm as well, but so far no one seems to have a problem in his roses. I hope this is because they have applied preventive insecticides and prevented the adult beetles from attacking. The adults can live for 30 to 45 days depending upon weather conditions.
First, to get rid of the adult Japanese beetles you can use a bucket of soapy water just below the branch that has the infestation. Then knock the branch of the leaves and the adult beetles will immediately fall into the bucket. It does not take a lot of soapy water to kill them.
You can spray with an insecticide labeled for use on your plant and also labeled to kill Japanese beetles. Unfortunately, as soon as the spray hits the leaves, the adult beetles will fall to the ground and you will usually not kill them on contact. But the insecticide left on the leaves will kill them when they come back to feed again. You will need to spray after every heavy rain to keep the insecticide in the right location to kill them
Do not use Japanese beetle traps. These traps will serve only as a dating service to bring all these beetles together to mate. The only ones you kill are the ones found in the traps and, unless you are using thirty gallon garbage bags, you will not even make a dent in the problem.
Second, be ready to kill the larval stage of these insects. The females will be laying eggs right after they mate and they will be looking for areas of good looking turf grass and other areas of high organic matter to ensure that the newly Hatching grubs will have plenty of food.
To control them, you apply Diazinon granules to lawn area. You can also apply Milky Spore Disease powder, which will kill only Japanese beetle grubs. The milky spore is a little more expensive but you have to apply this only one time as a grub control as the disease multiplies to kill more Japanese grubs from the decaying grub bodies.

Other control methods include pheromone traps and using plants that are poison to the insects. Another approach is to kill the Japanese beetle grubs. The beetles lay eggs in the soil, which hatch into grubs that spend the winter underground.

The old rule of thumb was to mark on your calender 6 weeks from the time you seem to have a lot of June bugs flying about... treating 6 weeks after the flight would help you kill the largest amount of them before going too deep. Today, with products like Merit that contain Imidacloprid, you can treat pretty much anytime of the year and have good results.
