Leeds is one of the biggest cities in Northern England. Whilst it grew due to it’s industrial heritage this great city is now a thriving tourist destination with something for everyone. What to do in Leeds?

Leeds is perfectly situated for trips to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, and all the attractions that has to offer such as Bolton Castle and Malham Tarn but there are plenty of attractions within the city centre itself.

For Culture Vultures in Leeds?

One of the most popular tourist attractions is Temple Newsam, one of the great historic estates in England, set within 1500 acres of stunning parkland. As well as the historic mansion house, nestled within the parkland is the walled garden which renowned for its Rhododendron and Azalea walk and features the National Plant Collections of Delphinium, Phlox and Aster novi–belgii. Temple Newsam also boats Europe’s largest working Rare Breeds Farm, with over 400 animals, a great day out no matter how old you are.

For art lovers there is The Henry Moore Institute and The Leeds Art Gallery, which both house fantastic collections of 20th century British art. If that’s not enough a short walk on away is the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery, which shows both innovative temporary exhibitions and display treasures from the University Art Collection. As well as these fantastic galleries, the UK’s newest art gallery The Hepworth, is in nearby Wakefield. Despite only opening in May 2011, The Hepworth has already been acclaimed as “one of the finest contemporary art museums in Europe”.

For history buff, Leeds City Museum is perfect for those rainy days. Some of the post popular attractions include the ‘Leeds Tiger’ and Nesyamun, the Leeds mummy. Visitors also have the chance to dig for fossils in the Life on Earth gallery. Leeds is also home to The Royal Armouries. The Royal Armouries is home to the national collection of arms and armour. The collection is spread over theme-galleries: War, Tournament, Self-Defence, Hunting, and arms and armour of the Orient. Across the city is Kirkstall Abbey, one of the best and most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in the Britain. As well as Kirkstall Abbey there is the fantastic Abbey House Museum, where visitors can experience the life in the Victorian era.

A GARDEN centre's charity night for bikers has raised more than £1500 for a mental health charity. About 200 motorcyclists from all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire converged on Dean's Garden Centre, at Stockton-on-the-Forest near York, and its sister

There will be rescue dogs from Tia Greyhound and new guinea pigs in need of names.

On April 30 Donaldson’s Vets will be on hand to advise about rabbit care and experts from James Wellbeloved will answer questions on pet nutrition.

There will also be charity fundraising as well as activities for kids and competitions.

William Armitage, director of Armitage’s Garden Centres, said: “We’ve got lots happening on each day including treasure hunts, competitions, prize draws, face painting and giveaways.

“But it’s really all about caring responsibly for your pet.”

There is still time to enter the pet caption competition, which will be judged on April 30.

Entrants need to email their funny pet photo and caption to be in with the chance of winning a prize including a pet photo shoot.

Pictures should be emailed along with a name, address and telephone number to ifpetscouldtalk@armitages.com.

The event runs from Thursday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm.
