Need to patch a debt ceiling? Try mending fences

One good thing about this fracas over the debt ceiling being played out by our elected buffoonery in Washington?

It's made America safe. Why would al Qaeda bother to mess with us while we're busy killing ourselves?

What ever happened to the fine art of compromise? It's not that difficult to pull off. All it takes is a little logic, a little empathy.

Sadly, the country's leaders seem to have neither as they play this game of economic Russian roulette. The trouble is, they're making Americans play right along with them.

My financial advice to you: Put all your money in a can and bury it in the yard.

In case you haven't been keeping up, there is this thing called the debt ceiling. Every so often, Congress raises it so the country can pay its bills. The economic whiz kids, and I'm not one of them, say that if it isn't raised by Aug. 2, the country's economy could collapse.

You know that expression, "You're money's not any good around here, mister?" Well, that could become a fact. This is not written in stone. But why take a chance on it?

Moody's, kind of the New York Yankees of rating agencies, is so concerned Congress won't raise the debt ceiling that it's considering giving the U.S. a credit downgrade. This could raise interest rates and make it more expensive for you to buy a car or a house. The stock market could tank, gobbling up people's savings. And there's talk about Uncle Sam becoming a deadbeat and not sending out Social Security checks on time.

Great. I guess that would make the U.S. of A the U.S. of IOU. Did you hear about the tea party's plan to change protocol surrounding the national anthem? From now on when they play it, you're supposed to put your hand over your wallet instead of your heart.

A few months ago, one of my next-door neighbors rang my doorbell to talk about the wood fence that runs between our yards. Take into account here that at the time I didn't even know this guy.

The fence that separates our yards was falling apart. A hole in the fence served as a nose hole for our dogs, who would use it to try to get a piece of each other. This was not good. So the neighbor asked if I'd like to throw in on getting the fence fixed.

His proposal: He'd do the work. (I'm not exactly Mister Fix-it.) I'd pay him for his labor. And we'd split the cost of the materials.

There was no argument about who owned the fence, or whose responsibility it was to fix the fence. There was no finger pointing. There was no ugly talk about whose dog was the bigger pain in the butt. Nobody called a news conference and said the other guy was a dolt. Nobody got up in a huff and walked out. There was no name-calling or shifting the blame.
