MORRISTOWN — Folklorist Dan W. Berggren says the first thing you will hear at one of his shows is yourself, singing along.

“I encourage audience participation. I like having folks jump in,” Mr. Berggren said Wednesday. The Minerva resident will perform at 7 p.m. Monday in the Morristown Gateway Museum’s concert hall, 309 Main St.

The award-winning musician and educator grew up on land farmed by his mother’s family for generations and has worked in the woods with forest rangers and survey crews. Hearing stories and songs from friends and neighbors, he said, has influenced a style that captures the spirit of the mountains.

“I grew up on the farm my grandfather lived on. His Irish-immigrant grandfather settled there in the mid-1800s, during the potato famine,” Mr. Berggren said. “My grandfather, Harry V. Wilson, was a rural delivery mailman. He started in 1915 with a team of horses.”

He said his musical repertoire consists of “a mix of old traditional Adirondack and north country songs” and also “a few I’ve written about people, occupations and situations.”

Mr. Berggren said his grandfather and one of his grandfather’s best friends, Cecil Butler, are among the inspirations for one of his favorite songs to play: “When Harry Carried the Mail.”

Mr. Butler, whom Mr. Berggren visited in 1975 “to learn more about my grandfather,” is described by the folk singer as a “fiddler, guide and a tracker.”

“He was one of those all-around guys, adept at many occupations,” Mr. Berggren said.

Mr. Berggren’s original music has been featured nationally on public radio and television, according to Christopher B.T. Coffin, Gateway Museum board member.
